This picture clearly depicts why Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice. It was taken just a few miles north of
the farm where Gudrun Magnusdottir was born and is believed to have worked the hay fields mentioned in the book Vestmannaeyjars Children. On March 21, 2010 this volcano erupted under the edge of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier. Because of threats of flooding the lowlands south, including the Berjanes farm, was evacuated to the village of Vik and Red Cross shelters. This eruption was small compared to the one that Gudrun's grandparents lived through,
the Laki eruption of 1783. This eruption must have dominated the conversation in the lives of her Grandparents,
Sigmund Audunsson and Gudlaug Magnusdottir. We are left to wonder if their lives were short lived due to the
after effects of the Laki eruption. We have no record of the death dates.
